Meanwhile, popping two cameras in the front (like the Pixel 3, purportedly) could provide some kind of unique bonus, as well. Will that work? LG’s recent flagship cameras haven’t had the same kind of detail or pop as their competitors, so we’ll need to see a much better effort to make the V40 ThinQ a real winner. Simply shoot a short video with any of the phones three rear cameras. Between the three, LG aims to provide the same kind of mix of detail-heavy, high-quality snaps along with zooming and bokeh tricks. So what’s the deal with LG’s setup? Android Authority claims a 12-megapixel (f/1.5) camera alongside a 16MP (f/1.9) wide-angle and 12MP (f/2.4) 2X optical zoom lens.

Huawei’s P20 Pro is the current market leader with its own triple-camera back setup, and it’s about to be a lot more common with the Mate 20 Pro and OnePlus 6T both pegged to feature it. LG’s tease suggests five cameras, with three clearly shown on the back and another two expected up front. Now here is where the LG V40 ThinQ plans to set itself apart.

On the plus side, the V40 applies blur to the foreground as well as to the background. What kind of cameras will the LG V40 ThinQ have? If you look closely at the sample photo below, you can see that the model’s right ear is inappropriately blurred, and in the crop, you can see that the upper-left part his hair blends into the background. The V40’s performance for bokeh was a bit of a disappointment: despite its multiple cameras, its score is lower than that of the slightly older LG G7, largely due to mapping errors. The V40’s flash performance is acceptable in all but the darkest conditions, but red-eye is very apparent in all flash portrait shots. And while the V40’s HDR in non-backlit scenes is fairly good when activated, images still exhibit noise in dark areas. In high-contrast indoor scenes, chromatic noise is visible, however. At 87 points, its Video performance is good as well, particularly for color and detail.Īlthough it’s not on par with the best in class, the LG V40 ThinQ preserves detail fairly well in outdoor conditions, and it controls noise pretty well indoors and in low light in relatively flat dynamic scenes. With a Photo score of 98 points, the V40’s strongest points for stills photography are for exposure and contrast, color, and autofocus. Test summaryĪchieving an overall DxOMark Mobile score of 94 points, the LG V40 ThinQ generally showed a marked improvement over the last LG device we tested, the LG G7, which appeared some six months before (in May 2018).
